CHILI COOK-OFF                                             

RULES & GUIDELINES

 

  1. The Entry Fee will be $10.00 per each chili entered. Contestants may enter more than 1 batch of chili. There will be an awards for first place for the following:

    • ​Hottest Chili

    • Most Unique Chili

    • Best Chili Overall.

  2. Setup and Judging. Each contestant must check in at the Chili Cook-Off Tent.

    • 1pm Registration and Setup

    • 2pm Judging Begins followed by serving.  

  3. This event is not sanctioned or sponsored by the Chili Appreciation Society Internationals (CASI) or any other chili cook-off organization. Black Star reserves the right to make addition al rules as the situation warrants. Rules are at the discretion of Black Star and are subject to change prior to registration on day of event. This event will not be canceled due to bad weather; therefore, no refunds will be made due to inclement weather.

  4. Chili is defined as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and other ingredients with the exceptions of items such as spaghetti, which are forbidden. Vegan chili is allowed. No condiments/toppings (i.e. cheese, sour cream, scallions, onions, etc.) will be allowed on chili to be judged. Entrants may serve condiments/toppings with their chili served to the public.

  5. CHILI WILL BE COOKED OFF SITE ~ All ingredients must be pre-cooked & treated prior to the event and transported to the site in an electric crockpot. Contestants are required to make enough chili for distribution to the judges and attendees. A portion of this chili will be submitted to the judges and the rest will be for public consumption.

  6. Cooks are expected to provide their own equipment for keeping the chili warm (crock pots) and supplying all of their own utensils and products related to their chili submission and maintenance of its proper temperature (at least 140 degrees) for serving. Electricity will be provided to you (Please bring a 50 ft. heavy duty extension cord). Tables, Spoons, Napkins and Tasting Cups for use in serving chili to the cook-off attendees will be provided. Condiments will not be provided.

  7. Cooks are to prepare and cook chili in as sanitary a manner as possible. Please refer to the Licking County Health Department guidelines for more information.

  8. Each contestant will be assigned a "Contestants Number" upon registration check in  and be given two (2) numbered containers in which their chili will be collected at the time of the official judging.

  9. The chili will be blind judged. decision of the judges is final. Judging will be on score cards which are numbered 1 - 5 for each category on the score card.

  10. Failure to comply with cook-off rules is subject to disqualification of that entry. The decision of the officials is final. In the case of DQ, the official monitoring the cook-off must immediately notify the head cook and give a reason for he disqualification.

  11. Each contestant is responsible for policing and cleaning up the area at the end of the day and removing all items from the area. There will not be an area for cleaning of dishes. No items shall be allowed to remain after the close of the Cook-Off. Dumpsters will be provided.

  • No Entry Forms...Your check is your entry! Checks ($10.00 per chili) payable to "Black Star" must be received before end of business day on Friday , October 20, 2023 to be eligible. This will assist us in knowing how many contestants that we will need to set up for on Sunday

  • Send checks to "Black Star", P.O. Box 1, Alexandria, Ohio 43001

  • Head Cook will be defined as the name on the submitted check.
